All-Male Panel Hilarity all the Way from 1889

We couldn’t find an image from the INC’s 1889 session, so enjoy one of their first session in 1885. Credit: Wikipedia

We’ve talked about all-male panels or “manels” before. And we’re going to talk about them again. Afrah Shafiq, artist and filmmaker, found this little tidbit for us on the kindness of Bombay manels in the 19th century. It just warms the cockles of our hearts:

What’s that, O nay-sayers? “Kuchh bhi”? Well Afrah Shafiq has her sources, and good ones too:

Source Material for a History of the Freedom Movement in India: Vo. II, 1885-1920, Bombay, Government of India Press, 1985, p 95.

Sita Ram Singh, Nationalism and Social Reform in India: 1885-1920, Delhi, Ranjit Printers and Publishers, p 87.

Radha Kumar, ‪The History of Doing: ‪An Illustrated Account of Movements for Women’s Rights and Feminism in India 1800-1990, Zubaan Books, 1997.

‪And since we’re only allowed to give a vote of thanks, let this be ours. Thanks, manelists, for letting us give a vote of thanks!
