There’s Something Surprisingly Satisfying about These New Anti-Child Marriage Advertisements

August 8, 2017

By Sharanya Gopinathan

Still from UNICEF Bangladesh via Youtube

Early this year, Child Marriage Restraint Act was passed in Bangladesh, and it allowed child marriage in “special situations”. Child marriage is a huge problem in Bangladesh, and the government has been doing a mixed bag of things about it, from creating laws that allow for child marriages in special situations to imposing harsher penalties for child marriage, although if you look at the details, they just aren’t harsh enough.

On a happier note, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs in Bangladesh tied up with UNICEF to release these two new anti-child marriage ads. I usually find ads like this problematic for some reason or the other, and even these ads to carry a hint of male-saviour-complex, but there’s still something kind of weirdly satisfying about the ads that are now going viral. Take a look, and tell us what you think.
