“Alice is a wannabe singer on a road trip with precocious 12-year-old son Tommy (one of the handful of amazing kids from American cinema). When the movie ends Alice (played by Ellen Burnstyn) is going to end up waitressing and falling in love with a very very impossibly sweet and dull Kris Kristofferson. More than the film I remember her — that her persona was at once strong and infuriatingly inconsistent. I watched the film on VHS when I was 14 and the inconsistency of her actions seemed more real than anything i’d seen before and became a template for the kind of characters I still like.”
