Fy Fy Fy Fy: Show Them How It’s Done

By Nisha Susan

Beyonce once had a dream: What if I were a gorgeous gender-bender singing a slightly maudlin song?

Sweden too had a dream, a grand dream that movies would get ratings based on whether somehow, despite itself, manages to features at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man.

Then Suseenthiran, a 35-year-old Tamizh filmmaker seems to have had an small-scaled but awesome dream. What if I shot a song sequence as if the female lead was in charge, as if she was the protagonist? Not as if she was a boy or Beyonce or Swedish.

The results?  Fy Fy Fy Kalaachify in the November release Pandiya Naadu. A song in which the heroine might be singing at the hero to come and finish her off but don’t believe your ears. Watch the video and in a few seconds you will realise the heroine (Lakshmi Menon) seems quite capable of finishing anything by herself. Meanwhile the hero (Vishal) gambolls in that charming, useless way that will seem quite eerily familiar to anyone who’s ever seen Mumtaz simper.

The song lyrics also has that hot and zippy endearment that sadly only Tamizh movies seem to have now: Karuppa. It could translate to just ‘hey black man’ but you know it really is ‘hey, my black man’.

Enjoy.
