Meet Harmonia Rosales. She’s a 33-year-old Chicago-based artist, who has decided to toy with representation in classical art.
Her recent piece, a re-imagining of Michaelangelo’s legendary painting ‘The Creation of Adam’, depicts black women in the painting instead of the white figures of the originals, and went viral.
Rosales is attempting to reinterpret well-known pieces of art in order to challenge the lack of diversity she sees in the art world. “I wanted to take a significant painting, a widely recognized painting that subconsciously or consciously conditions us to see white male figures as powerful and authoritative and flip the script, establish a counter narrative,” BuzzFeed reports her saying.
Take a look at some of her other work.
