Amidst all the International Yoga Day talk yesterday, and visuals of people doing yoga in the rain (at PM Modi’s yoga event in Lucknow, 21 kids fell ill because of it), it’s not surprising if you didn’t know that yesterday was also World Music Day.
Sonu Nigam recently shaved his head to prove a mysterious point to people who don’t care at all about the state of his pate, and it had something to do with his dislike for the sound of azaan waking him up in the morning. Kalki Koechlin does the opposite (okay not exactly) in the beginning of her cool new slam-poetry (but cooler) video released yesterday on World Music Day by Culture Machine’s Blush.
The video sees her exploring different forms of noise, pointing out that “we live in a noisy country”. She told Huffington Post India that she was inspired by the noises in her neighbourhood at Yari Road, Mumbai. She talks about the sound of azaan, church hymns, temple bells, fisherwomen, hijras clapping, traffic, road rage, social media chatter, vicious trolls and rape threats.
