At a time when Union ministers and random movie stars are being equally pointless and hot under the collar about a young woman student’s, far from radical, middle of the road politics (and turning a big blind eye to the violent threats against her) its great to know that Gurmehar Kaur’s teachers have her back. Today, the English department of Lady Shri Ram College, where Kaur is a student, has issued a warm and proud statement of support. The faculty say that they, “unequivocally and strongly” support her and her right to express her opinions about issues troubling the University. They express their pride in her doing her duty as a young citizen and then proceed to scold actor Randeep Hooda and cricketer Virender Sehwag (bet your ears are burning, you two) for ‘trivialising’ the threats Kaur is facing.
We don’t know about you but it feels like Happy Teachers’ Day in advance.
