Ernakulam resident Hareesh Peradi posted this photo some months ago, not in the thick of this World Cup season but the fever is real. Peradi wrote then:
ഇത് 1970-കളിൽ കോഴിക്കോട് കോർപ്പറേഷൻ സ്റ്റേഡിയത്തിൽ ഫൂട്ബോൾ കളി കാണാൻ വന്ന സത്രികളുടെ ഗാലറിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഫോട്ടോ യാണ് … ഞാനും എന്റെ അമ്മയും ഈ സമയത്ത് ഒട്ടുമിക്ക കളികളും കാണാൻ പോകാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു …. ഞങ്ങൾ അന്ന് കേരളത്തിന്റെ പടക്കുതിരയായിരുന്ന നജീ മുദ്ദിന്റെയും ഗോൾകീപറായിരുന്ന വികട്ർ മഞ്ഞിലയുടെയും ആരാധകരായിരുന്നു …. കേരളം ഗോളടിക്കുമ്പോൾ അമ്മ എഴുന്നേറ്റ് ചാടുന്ന ചിത്രം ഇപ്പോഴും എന്റെ മനസ്സിലുണ്ട്…. അമ്മയോടൊപ്പം കുറെ അമ്മമാർ ഒന്നിച്ച് ആർപ്പുവിളിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രം …. ഇന്ന് ഒരു ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫർ നോയമ്പ് നോറ്റ് കാത്തിരുന്നാൽ പോലും ഇങ്ങിനെ ഒരു ചിത്രമെടുക്കാൻ പറ്റില്ലാ…കാരണം ഇന്ന് കേരളത്തിൽ സ്ത്രികൾക്ക്‌ ഇങ്ങിനെ മത ഛീന്നങ്ങളില്ലാതെ ഒന്നിച്ചിരിക്കാൻ പറ്റിയ ഒരു പൊതു ഇടം ഇല്ലാ… ഒന്നിച്ച് ആർപ്പുവിളിക്കാൻ പറ്റിയ ഒരു പൊതു ഇടം ഇല്ലാ…. പീഡിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടാൻ വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട ഇടങ്ങൾ മാത്രം…. നമ്മൾ മുന്നോട്ടാണോ പിന്നോട്ടാണോ യാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്നത്
Our translation: “This is a photo from the 1970s Kozhikode Corporation Stadium. Women used to regularly go to watch football. At that time my mother and I went together a lot to watch football
We were fans of Kerala’s warhorse Najeemuddin and goalkeeper Victor Manjila. I still have an image in my head of my mother jumping straight up from her seat when Kerala scored a goal. The image of other mothers cheering along with my mother. A photographer could do penance do today and still not get such a photograph. Because today there are no public spaces in Kerala for women to gather like this without religious markers. No place to cheer together. They are harassed, they are isolated. Are we travelling forward or backward?”
We don’t know about you but this photo and Peradi’s note feels like a glucose shot.
