It’s Not an Anti-Trump Rally, Says Padma Lakshmi of the Women’s March on Washington

Going by news reports, the Women’s March at Washington will most likely have more participants than at Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony. No surprises there.

Gloria Steinem, Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette, Frances McDormand, Cher, Scarlett Johansson, Debrah Messing and Padma Lakshmi, among others, will be in attendance for the march. (Beyonce hasn’t RSVP-ed yet though.) Thousands of women are flying into Washington DC to attend the march and an ‘epic sleepover’ as well — women will be sharing hotel rooms, staying over at relatives’ and friends’ houses…

Padma Lakshmi, in particular, has been vocal throughout about the march, besides advocating for women’s rights in particular.

A co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of AmericaLakshmi tells Rolling Stone that she will attend the Women’s March on DC because she is “offended on behalf of everything that this country and the Constitution stands for” and that at the heart of it, the march isn’t “an anti-Trump rally for me”.

The former model, cookbook author and current Top Chef host Lakshmi and her six-year-old daughter Krishna will be attending the Women’s March together. In the long powerful piece, Lakshmi calls for all Americans to speak up so that power isn’t thrown away and that it’s their right as Americans to hold those in power responsible for their actions.

Marches like these are happening all across the world (they’re called ‘Sister Marches’). iFundWomen, a crowdfunding platform for women entrepreneurs, is planning to take a break from the startup and head to the march in Washington. Founder Karen Cahn had made this decision after Hillary Clinton lost the election to Donald Trump and talk of marches started taking place. Cahn isn’t the only female entrepreneur marching, she has company in Molly Hayward (who launched an organic tampon company) and Gretchen Jones (a fashion designer) among others.

At a time like this, it’s heartwarming to hope that feminism can one day Trump the world.
