What Rajdeep Sardesai Was Hoping For When He Asked Sania Mirza When is She Going to ‘Settle Down’

By Nisha Susan

Rajdeep Sardesai had a really embarrassing heh-heh uncle moment on July 13 when during an interview with tennis star Sania Mirza about her memoir, he asked Mirza when she was going to settle down. For reals. He asked, “Amidst all the celebrityhood, when is Sania going to settle down? Is it going to be in Dubai? Is it going to be in any other country? What about motherhood, building a family? I don’t see all that in the book. It seems like you don’t want to retire just yet to settle down.”

Sania Mirza had that kya-ba-kitna-bore expression and then said, “You sound disappointed I’m not choosing motherhood over being number one in the world. But I’ll answer your question anyway, that’s the question I face all the time as a woman, that all women have to face – the first is marriage and then it’s motherhood. Unfortunately that’s when we’re settled, and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones in the world we become, we don’t become settled. But eventually it will happen, not right now. And when it does happen I’ll be the first one to tell everybody when I plan to do that.”

Yes, you go Sania. Not that you need us to say you go because hello, ranked World No 1 in doubles.

Sardesai quickly retracted and apologised and said, he’d never have asked a man that question. Would he have apologised if Mirza hadn’t pointed out that was the question she and other sportswomen are most assaulted with?

We were imagining how Sardesai had imagined that conversation would go.

In his Mungerilal Ke Haseena Sapne moment, first he’d say:

Then Mirza would say:

Sure. That was really going to happen.
