After the fierce, overwhelming and exhaustive tales of #MeToo, Twitter filled itself with some much needed visual therapy with the hashtag #SouthAsianArtists on October 17th. The idea was to curate artists, painters, illustrators, animators and graphic designers from South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. One of the best things about these artists is that they are not necessarily current residents of South Asian countries, the hashtag welcomed art from artists who also belonged to South Asian descent. The result was glorious. Artists poured out the best of their work and graced our timelines with wonderful art.
But the most interesting part was how many of these artists’ work reflected female centric themes. Many artists depicted work that centered around female empowerment, which thankfully meant that it showed women having fun and not trying to excessively make a point. Some artists had queer friendly art while others put out fierce portraits of women. Whether it was an intentional move to provide support to #MeToo or because artists are naturally focusing on female-led work, the message sent across is both visually entrancing and ideologically wonderful.
