Why Do Some People Feel this Magazine Cover is Destroying Tamil Culture?

Jodi Bridal Show is a Toronto-based South-Asian bridal magazine that caters particularly to Indo-Canadians. Its latest cover, pictured above, has been receiving lots of angry comments on their Facebook page because you can see the model’s legs through a slit in her outfit.

It looks like the people posting angry comments were angry at either one of two things: that showing female legs on a magazine cover destroys Tamil culture, or that Tamil brides don’t actually dress like that on their wedding day.

The model in the picture, Thanuska Subramaniam, said to Now Toronto that there was “so much Tamil female talent behind this cover”, which makes it clear that it isn’t a case of cultural appropriation. People just genuinely seemed to believe that a pair of legs could destroy Tamil culture. Happily though, there were plenty of others on hand to express how stupid that idea is, and who were more than ready to post their views on social media too.

As for Tamil brides not really dressing like that, well, um, we know. Very few high fashion wedding dresses actually make it into a real person’s wedding day.

Yes, that’s a real person. Photo courtesy Pinterest
