February 8, 2014
Soni Sori
Soni Sori

Here’s the best news to arrive in a while: Soni Sori’s struggle isn’t over by a long shot, but she can finally make her way home.

Now for the bad news. We heard about Kiran Negi. The fourteen-year-old in Rajasthan. The two women in West Bengal. The 11-year-old in Delhi. The woman in Meerut. The woman in UP. And these are just the few incidents of sexual violence we know of.

A bit of awesome: Malobika on how the LBT group Sappho has grown in Kolkata.

Surya Bonaly

And a truckload of awesome: this video reminding us of the totes amazeballs gymnast and ice skater Surya Bonaly.

Piers Morgan threw a fit when he was accused of being insensitive to trans woman Janet Mock. Do you think if Piers and Arnab Goswami met, they’d be BFFs?

Dylan Farrow wrote about being sexually abused by Woody Allen, her mother’s former partner, and the / universe / exploded.

In the week that saw protests after Arunachal teen Nido Taniam was beaten to death and news surfaced of two girls from Manipur being attacked in Delhi, author Janice Pariat wrote about leaving Delhi after a similar attack on her.

A recent article showed how photographer Terry Richardson, who has shot celebrities like Beyonce and Barack Obama (and directed the horrorshow that is Miley’s Wrecking Ball video) continues to be hired by big magazines despite numerous instances of ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

Women got a foot – or perhaps a wheel – in the door at the Tour de France: the one-day La Course will see women cycling in this year’s competition.
