Desk Editor—Bangalore

We are looking for a high-energy, versatile copy editor who will edit and approve all copy in the newsroom, oversee the daily production of digital stories and contribute to editorial vision. This position will require you to line-edit and fact-check with precision, rewrite with imagination, and occasionally write stories of your own as per your interests. An ideal candidate will have a deep passion for digital storytelling, a sense of urgency and rigour in the newsroom and the ability to move into different roles as needed.

This is a full-time position based in Bangalore only.

Roles & Responsibilities

—Edit, line-read, fact-check and pressure-test stories on deadline with a keen eye for strong narratives that fit TLF’s unique and distinct voice.
—Rewrite and restructure stories as needed for keener form and content.
—Ideate TLF-style headlines, images and straps for website and social media.
—Produce stories on CMS and sign off before upload to ensure all published content has the look, hook and substance of a TLF story.
—Closely track the daily news cycle, identify smart ideas for news coverage and exercise excellent news judgment on what works for TLF’s audiences.
—Coordinate with bureau journalists and provide editorial support to senior editors.
—Innovate fresh ways of engaging audiences and new ways of digital storytelling.
—Contribute to special projects and collaborate on wider content and newsroom initiatives.

Qualifications

—2-4 years of desk and copy editing experience.
—Superior copy editing and fact-checking skills.
—A flair for reshaping narratives that follow TLF’s distinct voice and rigour.
—The ability to write a killer headline is a must, as is the skill and diplomacy to reshape a narrative without harming the writer’s meaning.
—Should be able to apply TLF’s house style, identify material that requires fact-checking, and execute fast on deadline.
—Must have excellent command over the English language, grammar, syntax, and various genres of non-fiction writing.
—Ability to work on multiple stories every day.
—News junkie with a passion for TLF’s work.
—Deep adherence to sound journalistic practices and ethics.
—Ability to work on digital CMS and package content for social media.
—Energetic and cheerful multitasker in a fast-paced news environment, with a knack for collaborating effectively under pressure.
