The Ladies Finger (TLF) and its sister operation Grist Media are hiring for our fast-paced Bangalore newsroom.

Assistant/Associate Editor

We are looking for a high-energy, versatile editor who will lead and inspire our team of journalists and oversee the daily production of digital stories. This position will require you to be responsible for the commissioning and assessment of stories, manage staff, copy edit and fact check with precision, and write stories of your own. An ideal candidate will have a deep passion for digital storytelling, a sense of urgency and rigour in the newsroom and the ability to move into different roles as needed.

This is a full-time position based in Bangalore. Night, holiday and Sunday work may be required.

Roles & Responsibilities

—Serve as the newsroom’s point person for daily workflow. Coordinate with bureau journalists, provide editorial support to senior editors and oversee the team in producing and managing daily stories
—Closely track daily news cycle, identify smart ideas for news coverage and exercise excellent news judgment on what works for TLF and Grist’s audiences. Run daily editorial meetings to ensure newsworthy ideas
—This is a hands-on role, and you will not only ideate and manage but also copy edit, fact-check and pressure-test stories on deadline with a keen eye for strong narratives
—Write thoroughly reported and incisive reportage, commentary and features
—Innovate fresh ways of engaging audiences and new ways of digital storytelling, including using digital tools like video, GIFs, Snapchat, Facebook Live, etc.
—Contribute to special projects and collaborate on wider content and newsroom initiatives

Qualifications

—News junkie with a passion for TLF and Grist’s work
3-6 years of experience in journalism, preferably in digital media
Experience in managing journalists or some leadership position, and the ability to work well with journalists and editors
Superior copy editing and fact-checking skills. Must be proficient in grammar and usage, understand application of house style, identify material that requires fact-checking, and execute fast on deadline
The ability to write a killer headline is a must, as is the skill and diplomacy to fix a confused story without hurting the writer’s voice
Deep adherence to sound journalistic practices and ethics
Energetic and cheerful multi-tasker in a fast-paced news environment, with a knack for collaborating effectively under pressure

Junior Staff Writer

We are looking for energetic newshounds who have a passion for TLF’s work, a keen interest in following the daily news cycle and an ability to write fast under deadline. An ideal candidate will be hungry to chase breaking news and curious to learn digital production operations.

This is a full-time position based in Bangalore. Night, holiday and Sunday work may be required.

Roles & Responsibilities

—Identify the most crucial news items of the day—from breaking news, trending news and readers’ interests—that match TLF’s sensibility
—Produce stories and content quickly and accurately under deadline pressure
—Find creative ways of digital storytelling, especially using images, GIFs, audio, video, etc. to make content more appealing and shareable for readers
—Assist in and eventually lead daily production processes
—Collaborate on wider content and newsroom initiatives

Qualifications

—News junkie with a passion for TLF’s work
—Demonstrated ability to write sharply and swiftly
—Attention to detail, yo!
—Nimble multi-tasker and enthusiastic collaborator in a dynamic, always-changing news environment
—Some experience in journalism or blogging (preferred but not required)
—Bachelor’s degree in journalism, writing, media studies or related field (preferred but not required)
