What if we treated sexual violence like it wasn’t a real crime? Oh, sorry, we already do that.
How about if we treat regular crimes just the same? If your car was stolen, accept that it was your fault for even owning a car in first place. Why couldn’t you walk? Take a bicycle? Use public transport? Serves you right for trying to make your life more comfortable or convenient. Shame on you for not seeing this coming. Just. Shame.
#stopvictimblaming is what No Country For Women (NCFW), a gender education initiative, is trying to bring about with their comics ‘What If All Crimes Were Treated Like Sexual Assault’. They’ve reworked everyday conversations as examples to highlight the ridiculousness of trivializing complaints, hoping to spark new conversations about the way we treat sexual assault victims.
