Meanwhile, students from the Women in the Public Sphere course at Duke University are fighting back against popular misconceptions surrounding the feminist movement by posing the simple question: Who Needs Feminism?

- I need feminism because boys messy hair is “sexy” but my messy hair is “lazy” and “UGLY”

- I need feminism ’cause I have terrible anxiety and the fact that I can’t leave my house without hearing whistles, people staring at my body, trying to talk to me, only because I decided to put stuff that makes me pretty, absolutely kills me. (Sometime I imagine I’m a boy so I’ll feel better.)

- I need feminism because I’m tired of feeling (and being!) laughed at for not being the rude, strong and insensitive persona I’m expected to be just for having a penis. Patriarchy hinders humanity.

- I need feminism because our (woman) principal when she saw me at school with a short she yelled “what is this thing” and told me she would consider me going on the trip because I was “representing the school” and “too short.”
