Wheee, thank god Amanda Palmer felt like writing a blog post day before yesterday!
She basically took to Patreon and then Medium to write a clearly heart-felt and utterly relateable blog post where she talks about feelings of inadequacy, insecurity and jealousy, and kind of breaks the feelings as she goes along. You can tell that this is one of those posts that she just had to write, was making her logical way through as she wrote, and probably banged out on her computer in one sitting.
She talks about how she notices that she feels jealous sometimes of singers like Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor, and pointed out how it always seems to be women of comparable success that she compares herself to, as opposed to huge pop stars like Madonna or Beyonce, kind of like how we’re never jealous of people in completely different lives and circumstances, but usually our friends and neighbours closer to us. She dwells upon how she chooses to deal with this: by acknowledging that this it’s happening, and imagining the person she’s jealous of sitting around being jealous of her.
She also talks about a Fucking Joan, a sort of representation of the perfect, successful but gracious girl that everyone knows and feels weirdly threatened by, and talks about how to deal with her. My favourite part of the post though, is when she talks about the things she did this past year (make a song with her dad, make a song with Edward Ka-spel and have a baby), and how none of the three were major commercial successes.
