The Ladies Finger Wins Laadli Media Award for Story on Potential Fatal Side Effects of IVF

September 17, 2018

By The Ladies Finger

Ila Ananya’s friend accepts the award on her behalf from prominent rural affairs journalist P Sainath in New Delhi.

We’re excited to announce that The Ladies Finger‘s Ila Ananya has won a Laadli Media Award this year. The Laadli Media Awards is a collaboration between Population First and the United Nations Population Fund introduced in 2007 to celebrate gender issues in the media.

For her incisive story, IVF’s Potentially Fatal Side Effects: OHSS, the Industry’s Barely Known Worst Nightmare, on Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) and its potentially fatal side effects, Ila Ananya has won an award in the Best E-magazine-Web Category.

Ananya discusses the condition that can affect women who choose in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to conceive, and how medical professionals at fertility clinics almost never inform patients of the risks of OHSS. One in three women experience mild symptoms of the condition, one in 25 experience moderate symptoms and one or two in 100 women experience severe symptoms.

Yet, as Ananya discovered, the condition arising as a side effect is either vaguely described to patients or its likelihood downplayed, despite its painful and potentially fatal nature.
