Anushree Fadnavis is a Bombay-based photojournalist with the news agency Indus Images. She also does this amazing photo series on her personal Instagram account, capturing snapshots of the people, particularly women, that she sees on Mumbai’s local trains.

Some of photos in her series have a bit of a Humans of New York vibe to them too, just in terms of how personal they can get. Fadnavis always tends to name the people in her photographs, and many are accompanied by descriptions of their lives and circumstances. They’re really great snapshots of daily life as it unfolds on local trains in Bombay, and leaves you with this kind of warm nostalgic feeling (even if, like me, you’ve never been on a local train in Bombay).

You can check out all of Anushree Fadnavis’ work on Instagram here, but meanwhile, here are some of our favourites.

Women pass around paper plates filled with food in the ladies compartment of the Mumbai local train. If there is any birthday, like in this situation it was the birthday of one of the members’ daughter, or any other festival, ladies in the compartment don’t spare any effort to celebrate that particular occasion. And they do it so lovingly and also invite the other women around them. I have also been invited in celebrations so many times. I am sure most of the other ladies also must have experienced the same. And if you think it is one woman’s responsibility to organize these then no. Women take it upon themselves, they plan and decide the budget and share. I have been welcomed so lovingly in some groups and sometimes I feel like I am a part of them. While some women want to sleep and want silence in the train . They crib of such women in groups . But there is something about these groups that I love .Sometimes it is this sense of belonging, companionship that draw these women together, . Also the love , the care and the crazy fun that they have. #traindiaries #mumbaidiaries

Pooja and Radhika, both who are members of Iskcon and have also taken ‘Diksha ‘ and who aare seen praying using the prayer beads , pose for a picture in the ladies compartment of the Mumbai local train. Pooja was named as Parmanandi Madhavi after taking Diksha and Radhika has taken the name as Parmanandi Rasmayi Gopi. Diksa / Deeksha is usually given in a one-to-one ceremony, and typically includes the taking on of a serious spiritual discipline. It is also known as giving of a mantra or an initiation by the guru in some Indian religions. The train was pretty crowded but they got my attention . #traindiaries #everydaymumbai

Namira. She has albinism. Her family told me she can’t see in the day. She gets really tanned outside even if she wears layers of clothes for protection. Her family says she can see only in the night. Thats why she doesn’t goto school. I asked them to send her to a night school or to homeschool her but they said that they live very far away from a school for which they have to cross a bridge and go and since has discouraged Namira and her siblings from going to school. And they can’t afford to hire someone to come and teach Namira. The family told me that apparently some foreigners had come and were ready to take Namira for a price of Rs.3 lakhs. But the mother said ” how can I do that to my own child. How can I let her go. How can any mom ever do that to her kid.” I asked why they wanted Namira and she said that the foreigners said that Namira had the same skin colour as theirs. Apparently Namira has been offered to play few roles on a television or film based on Naagin (snakes who can apparently turn into a lady) . I don’t know how she manages to get by. Life is difficult anyways but for her I can only imagine how much. I saw her watching outside the window in the dark that night and was wondering what is she seeing , what is she thinking! #traindiaries #everydaymumbai
