A Sombre New Photo Project Shows You the Actual Places in Which Rapes Have Taken Place in India

Have you seen the uniquely unsettling and very important Rape in India Project? It’s a crowdsourced set of photographs of sites where sexual assault and rape have taken place.

Each photograph is accompanied by some details of the rape that took place there. It’s sombre and honestly depressing, but worth your time. It really contextualises and gives meaning to the hundreds of cold reports and numbers and statistics we see in the newspapers each day, and really shows how specific, violent and awful each individual instance is. Having access to these kinds of visuals really makes it much harder to dismiss each case as another statistic.

It’s still in it’s early stages, and it’ll be important to see how the project shapes up. While a number of the pictures existing in the project already are of open or public spaces, fewer are of homes, apartment complexes and gated communities. I wonder if, as word about the project spreads, more people will send in photographs of their homes, rooms and private spaces, which are sites rife with sexual violence, but that often don’t make it into the national imagination when we think about rape and where it happens.

Scene 22: A 2nd year history department student of Jadavpur university was dragged into the men’s hostel on campus and molested and her male friend was beaten up on Aug 28th 2014, Kolkata. A complaint was filed by the girls family on 2nd September 2014 and an Internal Complaints Committee was set up by the University in accordance the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace 2013 to investigate the matter. Two committee members visited the girls home on September 5th 2014, they refused to identify themselves and asked questions about her dress on the night of the incident. This led the girl to file a complaint for Mental harassment with the Bidhannagar police in which she identified the professors of the University. A number of students then staged demonstrations demanding the accused ICC members be replaced. They also demanded to add 2 external members to the committee and increased security for students on campus. The police were called and it’s students were lathicharged . #‎Repost‬ from @sujatroghosh Scene 18: … Army jawans (cadets) gangraped a 14 year old girl onboard the Howrah-Amritsar Express, 28th December 2015. A 14-year-old girl, from ‪#‎Kolkata‬’s Dum Dum locality boarded the train as she had decided to run away from home to meet a boy from Punjab’s Ludhiana district. As all other compartments were full, she picked a comparatively less crowded compartment reserved for Indian Army jawans only. According to the police complaint, once the girl was onboard, she was offered liquor by the army men, and three personnel raped her when she was drunk. Scene 11: #repost from @poulomi07 on instagram … A 27-year-old businesswoman was gangraped by two men at her office located in the Vardhman Premium Mall in #NewDelhi Pitampura area. The accused had come to her office on the pretext of booking some tickets. After their initial conversation, they proposed to share a drink together, to which she agreed as the two were known to her. As the evening passed, one of the accused secretly mixed some sedatives in her drink, following which she lost her consciousness. The two men then gangraped her in the office after locking it from inside. A medical examination of the victim has confirmed rape and that the victim had been sedated before being raped.
