Have you seen all the buzz around the new Wonder Woman movie? No? Hmm, you’re not alone.
The new Warner Brothers movie Wonder Woman releases on June 2nd, 2017. It’ll be the first time it releases a movie with a solofemale lead, which is quite exciting. The last time you heard of it was probably when the trailer released and caused a furore over Gal Gadot’s Photoshopped underarms.
Now, the feeling people are getting is that we haven’t heard more than this about the movie because there just isn’t anything to hear. Uproxx wonders if Warner Brothers isn’t promoting Wonder Woman adequately, and they’ve got some pretty interesting facts to back their case: about five weeks away from release, the film’s YouTube page had three trailers and two videos explaining the movie’s concept art. Uproxx reports that five weeks away from the release of Suicide Squad, the movie had three trailers, four TV spot videos, an advanced ticket promo video and biographies for each member of the team. They also compared the YouTube channel of the Justice League movie, which is to be released way up in November 2017: they already have six promotional videos, which is more than Wonder Woman with four weeks to go. They further pointed out how inadequate the official merchandise is, and how it doesn’t compare to that of other movies from Warner Brothers.
After Uproxx‘s report, Warner Brothers released another trailer and TV spot video, but it makes you wonder what they were waiting for in the first place.
It feels like Bollywood, on the hand, promotes the hell out of female centric films: Anushka Sharma starrer Phillauri saw the film’s marketing team going a bit nuts and taking the whole invisible ghost idea so far that they decided to try invisible marketing. Fans were given a Whatsapp number on which to talk to Anushka Sharma, who wouldn’t appear on the video screen but would talk to them invisibly. Not sure if anyone would be impressed or fooled by the tactic, but hey, I guess it was worth a try. Lots of female-centric movies in India have clearly had overzealous promotions teams: Begum Jaan‘s promotions saw Vidya Balan riding around in a pink auto in Jharkand, while Kangana Ranaut distributed whips to girls on Valentine’s Day for Rangoon.
